Jagannath University Correspondent: On the occasion of the 44th martyrdom anniversary of BNP founder and former president Shahid Ziaur Rahman, leaders of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Jagannath University unit, paid floral tribute at his mausoleum.
On this day in 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated at Chattogram Circuit House by a faction of military personnel, allegedly as part of a domestic and foreign conspiracy. Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence, was a sector commander during the Liberation War and led the ‘Z Force.’ He later founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), now one of the country’s major political parties.
On May 29, 1981, Ziaur Rahman visited Chattogram on an official tour. In the early hours of the following day, he was killed at the Circuit House. His body was initially buried secretly in the deep forests of Rauzan. Three days later, his remains were recovered and brought to Dhaka, where a massive crowd attended his funeral at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Later, he was laid to rest near the National Parliament building.
Marking the martyrdom anniversary, more than a hundred leaders and activists of Jagannath University’s JCD chapter placed floral tributes at Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum and offered prayers for his departed soul. The gathering was led by JCD Jagannath University unit Convener Mehedi Hasan Himel and Member Secretary Shamsul Arefin. Also present were JCD Central Committee Vice President Kazi Zia Uddin Baset, Joint Conveners of the university unit Suman Sardar, Md. Shahriar Hossain, Robiul Awal, and other leaders.
Following the prayer, Convener Mehedi Hasan Himel stated, “On the 44th martyrdom anniversary of the great proclaimer of independence, introducer of multi-party democracy, and architect of modern Bangladesh, Shahid President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, we have paid our respects on behalf of JCD Jagannath University unit. We remain committed to his ideals in shaping the future of Bangladesh.”
